Interesting Facts It was initially called Abbey's Theatre. Irving & Terry performed during the first six weeks. Lillian Russell followed and then Irving & Terry returned during the Abbey's third year. When Henry Abbey died the playhouse was taken over by Al Hayman who renamed it the Knickerbocker Theatre. Sir Herbert Famous actors who appeared here:  Herbert Beerbohm Tree, Maurice Barrymore, Maude Adams, William Gillette, Eddie Foy, Sothern & Marlowe in Romeo & Juliet in 1904, George M. Cohan, & Douglas Fairbanks.
